Dear Kara,

Some 25 years ago, I reported on a property owned by a staunch Republican family that had not been assessed. I imagine there are other properties throughout the county that have been assessed at rates belying their true value. When you take office, will you be looking at these? How will you know which ones they are? I imagine the Assessor's office has a number of secrets that have been kept for years. Is there an accounting that you can do?

There you have it. Douglas County is desperately in need of accountability.

Thank you for the thoughtful question. Accountability is one of the core pillars of my campaign, and that means making sure every property is categorized correctly and valued fairly so that everyone pays their fair share - no more and no less. Public trust depends on a system that is applied consistently and impartially.

Fairness is also central to why I'm running. Regular audits and quality control should be a priority to identify inconsistencies, correct errors, and ensure assessments are accurate across the county. While I can't promise that there are "secrets" to uncover, I can promise to foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous review so residents know the process is being carried out fairly and professionally.
